About me

Hey folks! I’m Abhishek. I work at Amazon as a Frontend Engineer. I work on building things with a focus on enabling the next billion new users to harness the power of the web.

Currently, I live in Bangalore, India.

Apart from my life as a developer…

I try to dabble a bit at sketching and photography. Here’s a link to my 500px profile.

For a while, I had been trying to self-learn playing the piano but sadly that never really ended up going anywhere. I hope to be able to focus and spend more time on that in the future.

I love reading science-fiction. I have been a big fan of Michael Crichton and Orson Scott Card for as long as I can remember. My favourite sci-fi novel of all time is probably Ender’s Game. The first time I read it was in middle school. The fifth time was when I was in college. I lost count after that. Somehow, every time I read it, I find a new layer of underlying meaning to the whole plot which keeps on getting deeper into the allegories and metaphors and probably getting more relevant with time.

I’m enthusiastic about video games and have been getting into some action with Assassin’s Creed and Forza on Xbox lately. I don’t really play a lot of multiplayer; I guess what I’m really into are the immersive stories and adventures. And sports cars. Big time. Note to self: get behind the wheel of a Corvette Z06 on a racetrack IRL 🤔

My preoccupation with Siberian Huskies predates Game of Thrones. I hope to pet a couple of someday if I ever moved to a colder climate.

Also, my relationship with food is about living to eat and not the other way round.

A bit of background…

I was born and brought up in the city of Durgapur, West Bengal as the eldest child of a steel plant engineer and a homemaker with very humble beginnings, and I spent all my life till the end of my schooling days in the same town. My foray into programming started during my middle-school years although by the time I got my first computer I was in high-school, which is when I really found my love for building things with code.

My undergrad studies took me to Jalpaiguri, a quaint town in the foothills of the Himalayas where I spend four years of my life getting a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. While that was happening, I got into freelancing as a web designer/developer and ended up finding something that I really enjoyed!

Following my degree, I started my professional career in 2013 as a Design Engineer at a major steel industry consulting firm based out of Kolkata, India. However, shortly after a very brief stint there I decided to switch to my passion for software development instead and hopefully try making a career out of it! Soon after, I joined IBM.

Having spent the better part of a year at IBM as an Application Developer working on SAP products, I decided to venture back into my love for web development and started working at Amazon in 2014. This is when I moved to Bangalore, and have been living there since.

And, if you’ve come reading this far…

Cliffs of Moher
That's me. Taken right after "spitting off the Cliffs of Moher", a bucket list item from a favourite childhood book of mine called "The Wish List" by Eoin Colfer (the guy who's more famously known for having written Artemis Fowl).

I keep this photo as a constant reminder to myself to go and fulfil childhood dreams.
